Why Moon Days in Ashtanga Yoga?

Traditionally the āsana and prāṇāyāma portions of Ashtanga Yoga were not practiced on Full or New Moon days. These are days when the position of the Sun and Moon are in alignment with the earth causing a stronger gravitational pull along a single axis. Energetically these are good days to rest and when āsana practice is done daily, the extra rest day is helpful for restoration and reflection.

Why are moon days sometimes listed different than what I find elsewhere?

The observance of moon days in Ashtanga Yoga follows the lunar calendar system used in South India. This system calculates the beginning of the day from sunrise rather than midnight, so if the peak of the moon is at 4am, it will be noted for the previous calendar day.
